7/19/12 Round Top Mountain
One we hadn't done in awhile and a nice day with temp in the 70s. The trail starts out fairly flat and wooded
and is wooded most of the way. Once you cross the Kennebec Highlands Trail you begin a fairly steady but moderate climb. Before the summit ( which is not marked and difficult to know) you reach a short spur trail which takes you to a nice view.
Click twice for a large view
Shortly after you return to the main trail you get a view through the trees
And then a nice view to the east
Click again
The trail then drops quickly down and we came to the only spot that was a problem for Kelley. It didn't look like there was a way around and I was going to give her a hand but she went off into the woods and in a few minutes reappeared on the trail a few hundred feet ahead of me. We continued on down to the Kennebec Highlands Trail which compltes the loop back to the Round Top Trail. It is an old woods road and more open
We also did a small piece of the South Vienna Mountain Trail ( another old woods road) to find us a lunch spot before returning to the Round Top Trail and back to the trail head.
A nice hike - 3 hours
