Finding Trail Descriptions

So as not to repeat myself excessively, I am reducing the amount of description of trails that have already been posted. Please use the search function ( upper left) to find older posts which have more detailed trail descriptions and pictures. You can also use this to find specific hikes either by trail or mountain.

10/30/15 City Forest

Rained all day Tuesday and I had cataract surgery Wednesday (other eye in two weeks) and we also took yesterday off ( a friend took Kelley to Essex Woods one day and downtown the other) . But we are back - decided today would be short and easy. Wasn't sure about pictures as I had to wear clumsy dark glasses, but they went better than I had thought.

Looking across the meadow on the way to the beaver pond - surprised at how much color remains.

and beside the pond

Because of recent rains there was lots of water for Kelley

First the beaver pond

and then other spots.

Some trees as we neared the pond on the way back

Last shot for her at the pond

doing her shake

Following as we head back across the mown meadow.

On the cool side and quite windy so it was nicest in the woods. Kelley did well and was happy to see several runners and bikers. 1  1/4 hours

10/26/15 Perch Pond

Forties but sunny. We started from the North Trail head and there was a car in the lot  ( very unusual - we usually have the place to ourselves ) . There was, apparently a dog involved because Kelley was excited and barking and running ahead to try and catch up. This went on for some time and had us taking a different route than I had planned but we never caught up with them.

In the small pond,  before resuming the search

The reds are mostly gone but the yellows and oranges had a golden glow

The big pond at last

A gnome someone tied to a tree beside the trail

Another spot to get in the pond

Another section of trail

and some fern still very much green

A nice hike but longer than planned because of trying to get to a trail we hadn't done. Kelley did very well for most of the hike but was slowing down near the end. 2  1/4 hours

10/24/15 Trail from Fox Hollow Rd. and Walden

Cool but sunny. While we deciding where to go a friend came by and wanted us to show here a trail that starts at the end of Fof Hollow Rd. and connects with some snow mobile trails and also Walden. We started down the trail but at the junction came to a no trespassing sign that indicated bear hunting was in progress. We turned around and decide to go to Walden instead.

We just did the Loop Trail but it was pretty in the woods

and along the old rail bed.

A pleasant outing - there was water for Kelley and she did well. Few pictures because of much talking.

10/23/15 DeMeritt Forest

Cool and more clouds than sun. Didn't feel like a long drive so it was the nearby forest.

Lots of water around because of recent rains

Much of the color has faded but this tree was still bright

The woods are lovely dark and deep - R. Frost

Leading us through the woods

and one more go at the water

When we finished our loop we went across the road and down to the Stillwater

A small cove off the river

A pretty good hike on a mixed day. Kelley did well. 1  1/2 hours

10/21/15 Frye Mountain

Cold when we got up but into the 40's and sunny by the time we got to the hike- so good for us.  Kelley was enthusiastic and ready to hike. We did not plan to go to the top because I didn't want Kelley to overdo it and there is no view anyway.

There are lots of tumbled down old rock walls/fences on this trail

and beside Bartlett Stream there are small streams and pools

Waiting patiently

There is an alternate trail ( not shown on this map) that takes you to the road to get across the stream when the water is high. That was not the case today- the water was quite low

We hiked up to the SW Overlook - small views from there in winter when the trees have lost their leaves

When we got back to the main trail Kelley wanted to keep going but the hike was already going to be over two hours so I vetoed that and we headed back.

More water

She won't pose so I didn't get her exactly where I wanted her in this pretty spot.

We are past peak color but there are still pretty leaves

Another old stone fence

and more chances for water

A nice hike on a pretty day. Kelley had been enthusiastic and in the lead much of the way but was slowing down near the end and I decided I was right not to continue from the overlook. 2  1/2 hours

10/20/15 Neighborhood

Cold rainy morning and neither of us was up for much, so a brief walk around the neighborhood. I took my camera but only a couple of rainy day leaf pictures.
