9/12/12 Partridge and Ducktail Ponds
An incredibly nice day- lower 70's , sun, no bugs, and a quiet place to hike. We returned again to the ponds as I was determined to figure out what my problem was with these trails. As we were hiking in I noticed another fork to the right which I had not noticed on the previous hike. We continued on as we had last time and ended up in the same place. No view of the pond, no camp site, etc. Looking to the east I could see a pond and we bushwhacked to it.
I still wasn't sure where we were and looked for a trail that we could continue on ( I was thinking we hadn't gone far enough) and found one. It took us a ways and past a private cabin and then just petered out so we turned back on the trail we had come in on ( I have added an orange line along the west side of Partridge indicating the path which I now believe we were on) and took the first fork to what I decided must be Partridge Pond and Kelley got a well deserved swim.
We then went back to the main trail and took that back to the first fork ( one we had not been on before) and that took us to Ducktail Pond which we recognized from the spot we had come in on the other day from the Ducktail trail head. So the problem with the map is that it does not make clear that the trail continues past where it forks off to Partridge Pond.
Some things we saw at Ducktail
Though the trail thing was frustrating ( I didn't sort it all out till I got home ) it was a beautiful day and a nice hike.

John, Glad you are so dogged! I plan to return to this hiking area soon and this will be very helpful. This still seems to be a very little used area. Faith
ReplyDeleteHi Faith -- yes I think I have finally figured it out. I also saw the harvested area you talked about. There has been some new growth so it wasn't as stark as I was expecting. We have never met anyone on the trails and only saw those guys camping on Ducktail. Let me know if you want company when you hike it again.
