8/8/10 Western Mountain Loop
A nice Sunday in August so we decided to do the western mountains to avoid the crowds ( we saw no one until we got on the Great Pond Trail where we met more people than I had ever seen on that trial). We started from the parking lot at the pumping station and took Cold Brook and the road to the Bernard S. Ridge trail and that over the mountain to Great Notch. They have apparently erected a new sign at Knight Nubble as I had not seen one before.
The section between Knight Nubble and Great Notch has several steep rocky spots that present problems for Kelley but today she solved them all herself. Mountain climbing dog!
Overlook on Bernard Mtn. Trail
Great Notch Trail took us down to the Great Pond ( Long Pond) Trail and Great Brook which Kelley scrambled down to for a cooling dip.
I am continually amazed at the variety of lichen we encounter.
Great Pond Trail offered a spot for lunch and a couple of swims for Kelley before we returned to our starting point. 3-1/2 hours

The lichen resemble a map of central Europe. I'm just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteI believe they are called 'map lichen'
