8/16/13 Newman Hill
Beautiful sunny morning with rain predicted for the afternoon ( it didn't happen ) so we went to nearby Newman Hill. Last time we were here the deer flies were really bad and we had some concern about that. We start from the parking area near Taylor Rd. and at first there were no flies but as we walked up the road they appeared and then got quite numerous again. I was ready to pack it in but Kelley seemed to be really enjoying herself so we continued on. Once we turned off the rail bed and got into the woods there were very few and then none of the buggers and it turned into a nice hike. We even managed to follow the trails as shown on the map.
Boulder Pond, one of the four ponds, Kelley could use. I had seen this and Black Pond referred to as "bait ponds" and this old, apparently unused truck, seems to indicate they they were, and maybe still are.
Some of the other things we saw
I don't know this one
Viceroy
Perhaps a hoverfly
Dragonfly
A wildflower I don't know
So, a pretty good outing in spite of the deer flies- Kelley had water to swim in and the flies don't seem to bother her as much as they bother me. 2 hours
