Finding Trail Descriptions

So as not to repeat myself excessively, I am reducing the amount of description of trails that have already been posted. 11/3/12 Breakneck Road

A cold gray start but by the time we got to Hull's Cove there were some peaks of sun and blue sky. The land either side of the Breakneck is park property but the city of Bar Harbor still owns the old road  ( no leash rule and people can ride bikes) . In some places it has become grown inward and is a narrow trail and in other places it still looks like an old woods road.
The trail was wet at the start

And it's not far to the first pond

and Kelley's first dip.

This is a tiny stream coming down the hill and across the trail

There are small streams and pools all along this trail and we found some nice leaves in the water

The Breakneck Stream was not as high as I feared and was easily crossed

Lower Breakneck Pond

After we crossed beaver  dam that separates the two ponds ( Kelley was in the water not on the dam) we took a detour to the side to see, once again, if we could find the old abandoned trail to McFarland. Today we lost the trail more quickly than usual- I'll blame it on all the leaves on the ground. We continued on the Breakneck  until we were in sight of the highway and then turned and returned the way we had come.

Almost home

A nice 2  1/2 hour hike. We saw only one other person but he had two friendly dogs and that was good for Kelley.

  1. Hi John...I just love the waterfalls shot, water tumbling down over rocks "nice"!!
Those two leaf ones are very nice, the pattern on the water in the first is fascinating...what made the circle look...do you know??
Those hot days this summer I envied Kelley and her daily dip, but brrrr not now : )!!

  2. Hi Grace - Thanks for your comment. I don't know what made the pattern in the water - it did make it interesting. Kelley loves the water year round - you will see her in with the ice this winter.

  3. Hi John,
Great pictures! I hiked McFarland just before I left for the season; getting to the top was easy but I couldn't find the way down. Perhaps next year we can mount an expedition and finally find the way down.

  4. Hi Chris- Thanks for your comment. We have found two other routes up but not the one from the ponds. I'm up for another try from the top.
