Garden ( For Sue)

Not a hike but garden pictures- taken early this morning- that Sue has requested. I live in the city and have limited space and not all of that gets enough sun so I try to maximize the areas that do - plants are scattered all over the place.  I grow many things vertically to save space. I often have more seedlings than I need and end up sticking them wherever, resulting in a disorganized garden.

Sugar Snap peas- pretty much done will be replaced, today or tomorrow by second planting of cucumbers The long vine is a winter squash which I found last year, did well there. I'm not going to get a " beautiful yard " award.

Eggplant in pots on walk leading to front door

The drive is the sunniest and warmest spot. The peppers on the left are in pots for added warmth. Behind them, staked, are tomatoes. On the right is left over kale, cucumbers and some tomatoes in pots. You can see the cukes ready to replace the peas are in trays in front of the garage doors.

Empty pots , with weeds, that held Asian vegetables - two harvests but they don't do well in summer. I will do another batch in fall. They had netting over them to keep the squirrels out. Behind them snow peas are also almost done for this year

Kale - doing really well this year - pole beans at the end of the bed and tomatoes behind the kale.

Back deck - More peppers and some herbs and flowers. The large pot has a bush butternut squash

Summer squash and more pole beans. At the back are cucumbers. Behind the squash are bush beans that I am trying this year.

Salad greens bed - recently replanted - I try to stagger the plantings but often miss time. Also covered with netting to keep out the squirrels. Greens are also growing in the boxes on the deck.

Not shown are flowers stuck here and there - wherever there is a little spot of sun.

  2. You make use of every sunny space. I like it! You remind me of my hiking friend John. He does the same thing with his yard, and it is just as fantastic as yours.

    1. Thank you Linda- we make do with what we have. I found that a large amount of food can be grown in not much space.

  4. Oh I'm so glad you posted your garden pics. I love seeing other people's veggie gardens as well. You must keep us updated when you get the veggies. I wanna see them, lol. It's been so hot over here that my tomato plants are getting burned. I have the opposite problem, too much sun, and hot!! Our peppers this year are doing great and i planted poblanos for the first time and they were very slow at coming up but now we have a bunch!

    1. Hi Serafina - I have eaten and frozen Asian Veggies, snow and snap peas, and Kale - eaten lots of salad greens and some summer squash. No tomatoes, eggplant, beans, cukes, or peppers yet. I've also dried some regular and Mexican oregano .So far so good.

  5. My basil always does amazingly well and every year I make pesto sauce that lasts me all year until I get a new crop. We've had a few zucchinis for dinner as well as tomatoes and peppers. My cilantro never does well though. I love cilantro but it goes to seed and dies. We have a very small garden and some in containers (we sit on 5 acres but long story about why we have a small garden). This year I planted marigolds with the veggies and have less pests eating my veggies/leaves, yay!! :)

    1. I grow a a basil called columnar ' in addition to regular and that, because it does not flower and I can keep it going all winter inside. Cilantro does OK for me- I just have trouble timing it for salsa.
