Finding Trail Descriptions

So as not to repeat myself excessively, I am reducing the amount of description of trails that have already been posted. Please use the search function ( upper left) to find older posts which have more detailed trail descriptions and pictures. You can also use this to find specific hikes either by trail or mountain.

11/8/11 Sunkhaze

Kelley was a little lame last night so we decided on an easy (flat) hike at Sunkhaze. Another cold start ( thin ice atop the water) but a nice warm up. We did the Johnson Brook Trails and found this angry snake on the Birch Grove Spur. My first encounter with a snake that struck out toward me.

It did not give ground and was in the same spot on the trail when we returned.

The trails in this part of the reserve vary from grassy woods road tracts to narrow woodland trails. Perhaps one of the more interesting is this section of Cedars.

Kelley handled our hike of 1 3/4 hours without apparent problems or signs of distress. Nice hike.

  1. Wow; the last thing I would think about when meeting an aggressive snake is getting a good picture! I pulled out my borrowed copy of Maine Amphibians ans Reptiles. My guess is Maritime garter, but I'd love to learn what an expert thinks it is.
