Fifteen degrees, light overcast, and little wind. Winter storm warning for this afternoon to tomorrow.
I don't have a good map of this area but the trail is a continuation of the Newport to Dover-Foxcroft rail-trail we were on a few days ago. We started at the Irving and went west.
The start is through some open wetlands and the trail was rough and icy.
But we were soon in the woods and the walking became easy. It seemed very cold and I had gloves but forgot to put mittens in my pack and had very cold hands- hence not a lot of pictures.
More wetlands - I think beavers produced them.
At this stream we turned and headed back. We had not expected to meet anyone and did not.
Kelley could not get to the running water; any she could get to was frozen. Near the end of the hike she found a spot, along the edge of the trail, where she could break through the ice but there was only a little water and then thicker ice. She made do.
Cold but a peaceful walk in the woods. 2 1/4 hours
