Finding Trail Descriptions

So as not to repeat myself excessively, I am reducing the amount of description of trails that have already been posted. 8/17/13 Boyd Road/Path - Hunters Brook

Boyd Road ,or Path,  is an abandoned road that once ran from Rte. 3 to Bubble Pond. To access it you walk the park service road past the firing range ( the road is closed if it's in use) to a small clearing and look in the far left corner for the trail. At the beginning it is very narrow but later on parts of it are wide enough that you can see it was once a road. A very pleasant woods trail on which  we have never met anyone.  We walked it to the carriage road just south of Bubble Pond and then took the carriage road to the pond- this last little  section we have not found and may have been covered by the carriage road.

After Kelley had a swim and we had some lunch we took the carriage road down to the Hunters Brook Trail. There were lots of people on bikes on the carriage road ( no one walking) and we had to put Kelley on a lead so she wouldn't interfere with the bikers- she gets excited and wants to greet them all.

Once we got on the Hunters Brook she was again free and likes this trail because it closely follows the stream.

When you reach the trail head on the loop road it's a short walk up to Rte. 3 and your car.

A beautiful day without bugs. Kelley also seemed to think it was a good hike.  3  1/4 hours.

  2. Hi Grace- thanks for comments and birthday greeting. I know about those sudden turns too- places like this helped me through them.

  3. Hi John,

I've been thinking about the Boyd Road for a while and your post prompted me to hike it and Hunters Brook.

I think I followed the exact part of the road you did, although parts of it were almost completely over grown. I couldn't find the end of the road, either. There's a left turn which puts you on the carriage road in a few yards and I took it. I bushwacked to the very end of Bubble Pond but couldn't find and obvious end to the road. Hunters Brook was great and I had it to myself. Does the HB trail continue (informally) down to Hunters Beach?

    1. Hi Christopher- we have looked for the end several times- I expect it's under the carriage road now. There is supposed to be a connection between the beach and the trail. We have found parts of it near the beach but not the whole thing. It also used to extend further north and we didn't find that either. You should look at the book "Pathmakers" which has maps and descriptions.Let us know if you find things we haven't.

  6. Just did this hike today, so lovely. I have never been able to find Boyd Road after the (seemingly unnamed) pond and trail crossing that on the left, leads to the carriage road.
