6/5/14 Essex Woods

Another cool, dreary, rainy day. We took advantage of a break to head for City Forest but passed the street to Essex woods on the way and went there instead. We have walked the old rail bed ( in winter) and the path around the marsh and through a neighborhood but had not done the small side trails. None of them are marked and we just wandered around for a bit. We met a man with his dog and he told us they had been bike paths but now were mostly just walked. I did not try to show which we were took on the map above because I don't know.

After wandering a bit we walked down to the rail bed and then around the marsh. Kelley was very happy- it was almost like a new hike as we hadn't been here in some time and there was lots of sniffing to be done. There was also lots of water.

Some other things we saw

The entrance to the trail is at the end of a subdivision and as we walked through it I saw this flower in someones yard . I don't know what it is but it really stood out on this gray day.

Back in the woods for a couple more wildflowers

My idea to turn in here turned out to be a good one. We got in a pleasant  hour and a half without getting rained on. It was pretty in spite of the weather and Kelley got to meet a few people and a couple of dogs.
