6/29/13 The Neighborhood

The rain continues and is forecast for more days to come. We take short walks during the breaks- either downtown or around the neighborhood. Today I took a camera with me. Kelley's best friend Sarge has moved but Kelley hasn't accepted this yet and we still have to go by his former house to see if he is outside. She did get to greet a few people and one other dog.

6/26/13 City Forest

Rain forecast continues for today and the rest of the week. But it is cooler and more comfortable. It
felt like it was going to start raining at any minute so we went to the  nearby forest. We managed to get in an hour and three quarters with only very minor sprinkles. We only met two people so that was a disappointment for Kelley who always enjoys greeting  everyone.

6/25/13 Little Long Pond

It's been quite hot and continues so- forecast for 90 today and rain. Decided to do some water oriented hikes for Kelley. We did the pond hike a little differently so as to have both sides of it. Near the start we met three nice people and their dogs so we chatted as the dogs were in and out of the water. We did not see as many dogs as expected but met some nice people on our journey around the pond. I didn't take many pictures as I was talking too much.

White Admiral

Lots of water lilies but, as yet, only a few blossoms

After we did the loop ( 2 hours) we drove a little further on Rte. 3 with the intention of doing the Hunters Brook Trail which closely follows the stream and is another of Kelley's favorites. Kelley did not want to get out of the car- highly unusual for her but I accepted her decision and we headed home. We did not get the rain until early evening- thunder storms which make Kelley very afraid.

6/23/13 Saxl Park

Rain predicted again so we wanted another nearby spot. Saxl park is adjacent to a hospital and there is another small park at the other end of it. It is mostly a very large meadow through which mowed paths meander. There are small wooded areas around the meadow

and a pond for Kelley

She also liked the park because we had not been here in quite awhile and there were lots of new smells to investigate.

Some of the things we saw

We had a few sprinkles but managed to avoid any significant rain.

6/22/13 City Forest

Forecast is for rain so we stayed close to home. When we started there was high overcast and no wind - good conditions for pictures of creatures and flowers. Still plenty of water around for Kelley but fewer people and dogs than would be expected on a Saturday morning.

Down the hill and into the beaver pond

Red Clover

Wild Rose

Don't know these

Two versions of Crown Vetch

and a couple of insects

Don't know this either but appears to be some kind of grass

One last dip in the pond before we climb the hill to our car

We managed to get in most of the 1 and 3/4 hours without rain though it started sprinkling near the end.

6/21/13 Breakneck Road

Gray day but pleasant temperatures. I was feeling a little under the weather so wanted an easy hike and we hadn't done this one in awhile. This was once a road but is now a hiking and biking trail . The 'road' itself is owned by Bar harbor but either side of it are the park.

On parts of the trail you can see where it used to be a road- other sections are just narrow trail.

It didn't take Kelley long to find water

There is a large beaver dam between the ponds that you cross to continue the trail and then a short distance along the beavers have dammed a small stream and flooded the trail

We walked to Rte, 231 and then returned the way we had come.

Upper Breakneck Pond

A pleasant two hours - we met only a woman and her two dogs at the very start of the hike.

6/20/13 Kenduskeag Stream Trail

Beautiful day but I have gardening, lawn mowing, and bread baking ( friend coming for supper) so no time for a long drive. Kelley likes this trail because it follows the stream and she gets multiple chance to get into the water and there are other walkers to greet.

Another crab spider- every one I have found has been has been eating

I don't know what these are but thought they presented an interesting pattern

As you near downtown the trail crosses a bridge by an office and they have a nice rock wall with lots of flowers, including these Pansies

6/19/13 Little Long Pond - Harbor Brook

For the past three days we had been helping a friend who had an accident and, for Kelley, that has meant lots of car rides, switching cars, walking around in odd places during appointments, etc. So today we went for her favorite hike-  water, people, and other dogs. The weather was about perfect with sun and  70 degrees with enough breeze to keep the bugs down. Kelley seemed very happy to be out in the woods and was in and out of the water many times. She even crossed bridges she usually avoids. Not a good day for pictures as I took only a few and did poorly on those. Still a very nice 2  1/2 hour outing.
